Women's fiction is a wonderful category, however, in this instance, I feel an entire group of readers are being somewhat left out...it should be 'Fiction.' Men and Women would enjoy this skillfully written novel about life. Yes, the book follows the perspective of various ladies, however, men are central to each's story.Set in a small town in Alabama, the tale commences. We have a reporter's viewpoint. The occurrence of 'four and twenty blackbirds.' Yes, just like in the children's song. The bird watching society is abuzz with this exciting fact.More locally, everyone knows about the birds, even though they only sing at midnight to one. More concerning to the town folk is that an unknown person is taking over the beloved Blackbird Cafe. Gossip is flowing. speculation is strong, and the crux of the matter comes down to 'who's her people?" Can she bake? Will the pies continue?The tale from multiple perspective, covering sixty days, is masterfully told. I knew when I read the simple description of 'lemon verbena soap' that I was going to sit back and become immersed within this novel. And, I did.The tale in short, is about, people overcoming challenges and finding a better solution than they had been facing. It's about working together instead of solo. It's about life.Please read this novel. Tell your friends, book store owners, librarians, and get the word out. This book is an important one.
Heather Blake has come into her own. Wielding the pen in bold emotional imagery the characters Anna Kate and Natalie bring to life the truths of deep grief, the pains of living to please another, and the immense bravery it takes to heal. Each member of the cast is so thoroughly crafted that they are your personal friends and neighbors.A touch of magic and the deep throbbing wish that things can get better drive the pained to pie. Not as an act as of solace but connection. This novel rivals The Secret Life of Bees. Well done
I know Webber as the author of cozies, but this isn't really a mystery, though there's one unanswered question that is finally revealed. I'm not literary critic, so here's a term I am using carefully--magic realism. Anna Kate Callow is called back to tiny Wickilow by her grandmother's will which requires her to stay and run the café for two months. The café is known for its pies, which have the magical effect of causing patrons to dream of contact with departed loved ones--but Anna Kate has to discover the secret ingredient. And the café is known for the blackbirds, which appear and sing from midnight to one a.m.--if the mulberr6y trees are healthy. Then there is the Linden family who hold the Callows responsible for the death in a car accident of their son and heir--who happens to be Anna Kate's father. This novel is all about redemption and forgiveness and family and love--and it speaks eloquently for how one person can revitalize a failing small town. Utterly charming. I give it five stars even if it wasn't the mystery I was expecting.
